The sudden coolness of mid-October makes it easy for us to forget that it was mere weeks ago we ventured out into the furnace that was Riverside September ‘09 to make our way to City Hall. We hustled our podcasting tools into the elevator and up to the seventh floor. We were given access to the generous corner office to set up the gear and wait for the big event.

Mayor Loveridge has been in Riverside California city government for 30 years.

Needless to say we were pretty stoked to have landed a chat with the Mayor. It was only 11 shows ago we first introduced ourselves to the local podcastosphere…and here we were with the cheap mics and the Macbook in the cool climes of city government. Mayor Loveridge made a hurried entrance and looked somewhat amused to see that we had taken over half of his conference table with mixers and cables. All in all he kept us entertained the entire time, covering topics ranging from his early Riverside experiences to his political influences with a healthy dose of local history – and offering a measured and rational assessment of the challenges that come when a town grows into a city.

We wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to Mayor Ron Loveridge and his staff for their time and courteous consideration. Enjoy the show!

Our latest show features an informative conversation with Victoria Jauregui Burns, HIV/AIDS Program Chief for the Department of Public Health of Riverside County, and Program Chief for the county’s Medical Marijuana Identification Card Program.

Riverside County's MMIC Program is a result of California's Compassionate Use Act of 1996

California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996 was enacted by ballot Proposition 215 to ensure that seriously ill Californians have the right to obtain and use marijuana for medical purposes where that medical use is deemed appropriate and has been recommended by a physician. As the initiative did not elaborate the regulatory system required to oversee such activities, the application of the law has been a patchwork of haphazard solutions. While we have yet to see a uniform, statewide application of regulation, Riverside County has assembled one of the first programs in the nation to issue ID cards to identify those people who meet state requirements to receive and use medical marijuana.

Join us as we learn about the history of the program and the requirements and procedural path to obtaining a Medical Marijuana Identification Card in Riverside County, California.

It was another hot and noisy summer day in Rivercity, so Tim and I slipped across the mighty Santa Ana to Riverside-adjacent to take refuge in the cool and quiet surroundings of Sound Sanctuary Studios. Our host, owner/producer/engineer Phil O’Keefe, took a break from mixing to talk to us about the history of Sound Sanctuary, his work, and the things songwriters and musicians should look for when booking a recording studio.

We spent a recent August afternoon talking with UCR graduate student and author of the local blog “Riding in Riverside“, Justin Nelson.

In addition to being an expert public transit user, Justin is currently the coordinator of CalPIRG (California Public Interest Research Group) UC Riverside’s public transit campaign.

Justin Nelson gets us informed about the state of public transit in Riverside.

We discuss the complete public transit system that once existed throughout the Inland Empire (and the rest of the L.A. Basin) and examine today’s attempts to get more people out of their cars and into a more efficient transportation mode.

We braved the wicked Riverside July heat earlier this week and ventured out the I-215 to visit Ryan Gil de Montes at Inland Empire Brewing Company.

With the memory of the prior week’s tasting still fresh on our minds’ palletes we wanted to find out more about the history of IE Brew and what it entails to go from your kitchen stove to a full service micro brewery.

Tim is finding that his producer hat is breaking in nicely and he has introduced a few more refinements to the podcast along with a new feature we hope to continue with all of our guests. We also tried a “mobile” mic technique with my iPhone when we were in the brewery. I had read about a BBC correspondent using the new little voice app with success but I think he was using it for shorter segments. We learn, we learn.

Show #5: The Riverside Plaza – Then and Now

Earlier this week we recorded our first interview with Sean Faustina, Marketing Director of the Riverside Plaza (and a friend of ours from back in the day. We had planned to set up outside on Main Street. However, the Riverside summer has kicked in and it was well into the 80s by 10:00 AM. Fortunately, Coffee Depot was OK with us taking advantage of their AC & AC.

If you’ve been around town a couple of decades (or more) you’re familiar with the changes The Plaza has been through – open-air to enclosed-80s-mall to open-air once again. We talk about what was great about the old days and the incredible success of The (new) Riverside Plaza.

We want to hear your memories of The Plaza! What did we leave out? Did you have a Plaza job? I almost did – but that’s for another show.

Welcome to the fourth installment of i.e. with ralph and tim! This week we decided to offer up a few visuals with the commentary.

I’ve been curious about all the new contraptions appearing on Riverside’s street light and traffic light fixtures, so I went out last week to take a few photos so I could show them to Tim to see if he knew anything about them. We both figured the best way to show them to YOU was to post them here as our first blog entry.
